Please state your full name and which workshops you would like to attend. There are three groups (A, B and C) starting in 2012. Please state which of these groups you would like to join, and whether you can join another group if your first choice is full.

Priority will be given to teachers who apply for a series of workshops.

 

When you register for a workshop, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. If you don't receive an e-mail within a couple of days, it means your registration has not gone through.

David Paul

Founded David English House in an apartment in Hiroshima in 1982 and built it up to become one of the most respected schools in East Asia. He is also the founder of ETJ (English Teachers in Japan). David has spent a lot of time travelling around East Asia training teachers and helping both private schools and ministries of education to introduce more student-centered programs. He has also been a guest speaker at many conferences throughout the region. However, these days, when he is not teaching, he focuses almost entirely on training and supporting teachers at a grass-roots level.

Ann Mayeda

A teacher and teacher-trainer based in Kobe, Japan. She has over 20 years of experience working with a range of learners but has always been drawn to working with young learners and all the wonderful teachers dedicated to working with them.  She has been involved in teaching and coordinating a MEXT-funded teacher-training program for elementary school teachers, and whenever time allows continues to conduct workshops for schools and teaching organizations throughout Japan. In addition to her lecturing duties at Konan Women’s University, she serves on the advisory board for Our Discovery Island, Pearson’s latest young learners EFL series and is a tutor on the University of Birmingham CELS MA distance learning team. The continuing theme in her teaching/learning philosophy centers on learner development and issues in autonomy as it applies to children and young adult learners.

Mari Nakamura

Owner of English Square, an English language school in Kanazawa, where she teachers children and teenagers. She has also been authoring several ELT materials, including English Land (Pearson Kirihara) and Doraemon Hajimeteno Eigo Jiten (Shogakkan) while providing teacher training sessions since 2005. She is active at both ETJ and JALT, and has a master's degree in TEYL.

Setsuko Toyama

Having worked in the field of English Language Teaching for more than twenty years, she is a visiting professor at Keiwa College in Niigata, where she conducts teacher-training courses. She has presented at many conferences both in Japan and overseas. As well as teaching English to students of all ages, including team-teaching in special needs classes, she conducts teacher-training seminars at Tsuda College Open School and works closely with elementary school teachers of PEN (Primary English in Niigata) in developing English language teaching content and improving teaching practices.

Kathleen Kampa

With over 25 years’ experience in teaching young learners, Magic Time co-author Kathleen Kampa continues to explore new ways to motivate and inspire children. Kathleen is also co-author of the new Oxford series, Everybody Up. In addition to her work in English language teaching, Kathleen has trained teachers around the world with a focus on very young learners, multiple intelligences strategies, music and movement/dance. She currently teaches at Seisen International School and Sullivan School of English.

A comparison of different theories and the implications of these theories for classroom practice. Teachers will look at the assumptions behind the methods we use.

 

YL2: Child-centered learning

What is child-centered learning and how can we incorporate child-centered methods in our classes? Teachers will compare teacher-centered and child-centered methods.

 

YL3: Teaching phonics

Trainer: David Paul

What is the role of phonics and how can we teach phonemic awareness? This session will also contrast phonics with other approaches to teaching reading and writing and look at the role of each approach.

 

YL4: Phonics activities

Teachers will practice a range of activities for teaching phonics. This will include the creation of new activities by teachers.

 

YL5: Teaching listening and communication

How can we develop children's listening and communication ability? The ability to communicate includes a variety of elements. This session will look at how these can be scaffolded over a period of time.

Writing is the most difficult of the four skills, but mastering writing greatly improves the children's ability to internalize language. This session will look at how to teach writing in an effective way.

What's beyond the ABC'S? This session will discuss effective ways to develop children's reading fluency and comprehension skills with the aim to help them become lifelong readers.

Songs and chants as teaching materials should present the rhythm, stress and intonation of natural English. Teachers will learn various songs and chants and will make their own.

Teachers will learn various classroom-tested activities that compliment “Hi, friends!”, a MEXT provided teaching material. Tips on team-teaching with homeroom teachers will be discussed.

 

YL 17: Multiple intelligences strategies for very young learners

How can we use multiple intelligences (MI) strategies to maximise learning? MI can be used to explore the various ways in which children learn, but it can also be used a teaching tool to diversify our lessons. Learn how to use MI with young learners to create fun, exciting lessons!
